Computer Voices

Well, it’s my first blog, and I’m attempting to put this together on my iPhone, so we’ll have to see how it goes. Putting a blog together always initially seems like a good idea, but as always, it’s bound to go pearshaped.

So, vent time!

Something that has been bothering me for a long time is the rise of the computer voice. It’s everywhere now and it’s getting to the point where people take the bizarre little pauses between words as normal.

I’m trying to work out which area of my life is most affected by this phenomenon. It’s definately a tie between those phone calls you get with the computer voices and the voice-overs on a train. It’s all so irritating that I wish I actually had a mute button. The main issue with the telephone marketing calls that we all get these days is that WE DIDN’T ACTUALLY ASK FOR THEM. They just magically pop up out of the ether. The very start of the call is the most annoying, from the customary initial silence at the start of the call through to the intro speech. Good examples of a bad intro are…

“Did you know that you could safe money…”

And a great one:

“Are you in debt?”

What? What has my personal financial situation got to do with you? (Can we even call it a you?)

Even worse are the modern call centres…

“if you are trying to check your balance, press 1″

Arrggh! no, I just want to talk to a human so I can complain. Because I hate this impersonal system.

Are there companies out there where the phone just rings until someone picks up?

They know the score.

However it seems to me that we are all doomed to the computer voice. Give me strength.
